City of Brass
In the City of Brass, elves are very short-lived beings. The typical elf matures by age 5 and dies by age 20. Their short lives can cause individual elves to take life very seriously or not seriously at all.
Because short lives relative to other races diminishes elven chances for political power, they compensate through a sort of racial memory. Every city has a Great Tree, a natural shrine that connects magically to every other Great Tree. The elves visit their shrine regularly and place their hand on the Tree, which absorbs a copy of their memories forever.
When an elf’s spirit is reborn, they have access to those stored memories when they visit the tree and meditate for guidance. Some elves can even tap into the collective wisdom of all elves, but these individuals are rare (and vary widely in terms of how widely they can search the Tree).
